Does the iPhone 4 Scratch?
The iPhone series continues to compete with the smart phones in the market today. Many are anticipating for a much better version from the previous models Apple has manufactured from the applications that it contains, down to the product design of the mobile phone.
Apple has emphasized through their advertisements that the iPhone 4 smart phone is built with an aerospace-grade glass which is 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic. With this chemically strengthened Gorilla Glass cover, it is very durable that ever making it a scratch-resistant phone.
Gorilla Glass is an alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass that is intended as a protection for high-end devices such as mobile phones. It claims that it is thin, light weight, resilient and it has the ability to endure repetitive touches. It can be customized, easy to clean, and if there is breakage, it can hold itself together. Through chemical strengthening, there is the formation of a compression layer that serves as protection. As compared to the sapphire crystal and other types of glass, Gorilla Glass is said to be much stronger.
The iPhone 4, with its Gorilla Glass cover, is designed to be super strong that it can withstand beating. It looks and feels sturdy. It can survive a few drops and perhaps more on a carpeted floor. It is meant to be used for a long time.
Unfortunately, many have iPhone users have already tried to prove that Apple’s claims are entirely not true and that the iPhone can be scratched. Some who are already misled have already come to the point of actually breaking the hand set to justify their claims, which on the other hand is not even a valid test just to prove the iPhone 4’s resiliency to scratch. While it claims to be 30 times harder than plastic, it did not imply that it is also 30 times more resistant to scratch and neither it is 30 times unbreakable.
Fortunately, there is the Apple provided a bumper along with the iPhone 4 case for the much needed protection. It may have affected the phone’s sleek design but it will give the user a more durable phone. Also, it has offered to unsatisfied customers free cases just to end the misery of the iPhone.
A certain company that concentrates on manufacturing, protective coverings for hand-held devices have already made something for iPhone to protect its plate from any further damages. The clear protective film makes scratches barely noticeable and that it is sturdy enough that you do not have to encase your iPhone making it look bulky.
At the end of the day, comparing iPhone 4 with the previous iPhone designs, it is much more resistant to scratches. Still, it should be treated as a luxury that can be nicked and could break if it is not given the care that it really needs. It should not be thrown, hammered, or to be kept in your pocket along with all the coins and keys as it can really get scratches.
